"Sick Care" vs. Health Care

'- 3 minute read -

Turning off the smoke alarm doesn't put out the fire

In the U.S., we tend to think that if we’re not sick it must mean we are healthy. The modern health care system is all about reducing or eliminating symptoms. This is what we call "sick care" in our clinic because the goal of this system is to keep us notsick instead of well. The main goal in our medical system is to treat symptoms, rather than preventing or treating illness through natural, everyday means. When you only treat the symptoms, it’s as if you are turning off the smoke alarm when your house is burning and thinking you’ve fixed the problem. We tend to focus more on making ourselves comfortable rather than going to the actual root of the problem or trying to prevent ourselves from being unwell.Being truly healthy is about more than just not being sick. That being said, our health care system is necessary. We need to be able to treat illnesses and give aid in emergency situations when they occur. This is what the modern health care system was originally intended for, but it's evolved into something different today.

We do things differently

Many people come to our clinic wanting relief from pain. At Homewood Friends and Family Health Centers, our goal is to go beyond symptom based care and focus on the underlying cause of the pain and discomfort. We want to redefine health care and put the focus back on treating the cause and preventing illness from the root of the problem in a natural way. Our bodies are meant to heal themselves naturally. However, many other elements prevent this system from running smoothly including spinal injury, subluxation, poor diet, lack of exercise and blood flow, or even high amounts of toxicity in the body—especially man made toxins*. We want to go beyond just relieving your pain by also educating you on the foundations of being healthy and helping you keep yourself well and hopefully pain-free. We want you to be able to take control of your own body and life.Health is built on consistency. That’s why we build care plans for our patients and encourage them to form healthy habits. So many ailments and illnesses can be prevented by keeping the body healthy in the first place. The symptoms are telling you something about your body. It’s important to listen to the first sign of symptoms as a message from your body telling you something is wrong. So many people wait until the pain or discomfort gets so bad that it’s crippling. The sooner you notice a problem and do something about it, the better because you will receive better help. Our goal is to help you be the healthiest you can be throughout your life. The best thing you can do is to pay close attention to your body and work to consistently be healthy on a daily basis.*Read our 5 Foundations of Health blog post
