As a Chiropractor, I help people improve their health on a daily basis. The word help is very important here because I can not do it all on my own. YOU are the most important part of the journey to improve your own health.
Many people have gone to a health care professional and just wanted them to fix whatever you have going on because we all want that quick fix. If life could only be that easy there would be way less pain, sickness, and diseases in our society today.
Dealing with Symptoms
The most common reason people come to see me is that they are in pain. In the beginning of care, it is normal for symptoms to come back early because change doesn’t happen overnight. You have to think about how long you have been having the problem you are dealing with, so it’s going to take a little time for it to go away. As you get further with your care, you should be holding your adjustments longer and hopefully having less pain intensity and frequency. For some people that doesn’t happen, and they keep going through the same cycle with their pain and dysfunction.
Look at Your Habits
At that point, it is important to look at habits that might be holding you back. Those habits might be the reason you are in pain. If you continue doing the same thing you are not likely to get better. This is where you have to sit down and look at your daily routine. Are you getting enough sleep? Are you eating food that fuels you and helps you heal? Or are you eating food that causes inflammation in your body? Are you trying everything you can to be in the best mental state possible and decreasing as much stress as possible in your life? Are you exercising regularly?
I recently attended seminars where both instructors talked about the importance of increasing strength to get out of pain, and stay out of pain. After age 30, muscle mass starts to decline by 3-5% each decade, which will lead to weakness and less mobility. So after you turn 30 it is all up to you make sure you don’t lose your muscle mass!
Health Through the Holidays
As the holiday season is creeping up on us with all the stress, unhealthy food, and less activity you might start noticing that you are not feeling as good. Then the new year hits and you start tearing yourself down due to all the weight you gained. Then you buy a gym membership, but give up in 3-4 weeks because you are not seeing the results you wanted. Your health should be something you are always working on in order to enjoy life to the fullest. I’m not telling you not to enjoy the holidays, I just want to encourage you to focus on your health during that time as well. Then you will enter 2020 in a much better state, and you won’t have to spend a couple months fixing the damage done to your health in the last two months of 2019.
A health care professional is there to be your guide towards improved health, but in the end it is up to you to do everything possible to make that happen. We are here to give you all the advice you need and, but only YOU can change YOURSELF!
