As a Chiropractor I see people every day that have this sudden onset of pain, most of the time due to some physical activity they were performing, or sometimes flare-ups show up out of the blue, and they can’t think of any reason why it happened.
When this happens, the patient tells me they have been so good for a while, and had no issues after their initial pain had been resolved. They might have gone to the Chiropractor, physical therapist, medical doctor, or just made some lifestyle changes that helped them get out of pain. The period they felt fine can be from a couple of days, weeks, months, or even years.
When they went through their treatment plan or lifestyle changes, they probably did almost everything they were told to do to get out of pain because pain can have a tremendous effect on your daily life.
As humans, we all want the magic pill or solution that helps us get better as fast as possible, but the fact is that it takes work to create and maintain change. The reason your pain came back is probably because you started slacking on the rehab exercises you were given, your diet isn’t as good as it was, you're not drinking enough water, not sleeping enough, and stress is controlling your life. All these factors and more can be the reason the pain came back. You have to be constantly taking care of your body to prevent pain and dysfunction.
Chiropractic care doesn’t make you immune to new injuries or reoccurrence of old pain patterns. If you have been consistent with care, it will help you get back on track faster. That's why we as Chiropractors tell you to stay on top of your care. The pain will go away faster, but the dysfunction in the spine is still there. It takes years to end up with a dysfunctional spine, and that’s why it takes more than a couple visits to correct that dysfunction. All the changes you have to make are very important because that will take you there faster and build a better foundation for improved health.
I have talked about this before, but movement is so important to your health. Making sure you are pushing yourself to get stronger, have better endurance, and better balance is such a big part of preventing pain and dysfunction. I used to be an athlete, but as I got older I started exercising less, and at the same time felt how my body was declining. I told myself that it was more important to sleep in than waking up to exercise. I got the point where my body wasn’t functioning for all the things I needed to do in my daily life, and that was a wake-up call for me. Now I exercise at least 5 times per week without excuses, and feel better than I have in a long time. My energy levels are way better throughout the day, and I don’t need those extra hours of sleep I thought I needed.
As we shift gears from being in the Winter months and now getting into the heart of Spring here in Birmingham, more and more people have been coming into the office. Of the many types of patients we see, we have had so many of our patients coming in being pregnant. They have ranged from, "we just found out!" to week 34-36, "just get me out of pain!"
