I have talked about the importance of Chiropractic care for pregnant mommas, but haven’t addressed the importance of care after pregnancy.
When the woman reaches the end stage of pregnancy, it gets harder for her to move around. That happens as the baby gets larger and drops lower into the pelvis. Throughout the pregnancy, the body has been producing relaxin which is a hormone that will help the ligaments in the pelvis relax to allow the baby to come out.
After the birth, the ligaments start to tighten up again to help the pelvis get back to where it was before pregnancy. The birthing process is not the same for every woman and therefore will not affect every woman the same way. Because of that, the healing journey is different for every woman.
During that healing journey, the pelvis and lumbar spine do not always get back to normal without a little help. Misalignment of the pelvis and lumbar spine can lead to dysfunction and pain that the woman might not have had before. It is important to get that addressed because the during the upcoming years the woman will be caring for the infant and then later chasing a toddler around. It is also important to address these dysfunctions if the woman is planning more pregnancies in the future to avoid pain patterns during that pregnancy.
Many women develop upper back pain and neck pain postpartum from breastfeeding so it is important to be aware of your posture during feedings. Mommas will spend hours hunched over their babies. They need to try their best to prop themselves and the baby up for optimal support. Chiropractic can help improve posture and make feedings more bearable.
Being a new momma can be very difficult for a woman both physically and emotionally, and the hormones are still raging. The nervous system is in charge of every single cell in the body, and we as Chiropractors take care of the nervous system. We remove the interference to the nervous system so your body can heal.
Taking care of your child is important but you have to take care of yourself as well so you can be there for your child.
As we shift gears from being in the Winter months and now getting into the heart of Spring here in Birmingham, more and more people have been coming into the office. Of the many types of patients we see, we have had so many of our patients coming in being pregnant. They have ranged from, "we just found out!" to week 34-36, "just get me out of pain!"
Many of you as patients have been admonished by your chiropractor and/or chiro-wise friends for self-adjusting (ie “popping your own back”). While there is no denying that doing so can provide short-term relief, it’s not a wise long-term solution. Here’s why.

This is the most common response I hear any time I ask to see a patient’s blood work. They have been told that everything is normal, yet they still feel awful. How could this be the case? This post is specifically about why medical and functional blood analysis is different and absolutely needs to be understood
